Aspire • Mural Concept for Southwest Applied Technology College 2015
Michael Moonbird & Victoria Lyons © 2015
Moonlyon Arts proposed a mural design concept titled Aspire for the SWATC Allied Health and Technology Facility in Cedar City, Utah that has a timeless vision for the future of the college. To aspire is to seek inspiration, achieve excellence, while discovering new possibilities in one’s self and future. The design is a spiral that radiates outward suggesting a sense of connection to others and community while striving towards success and prosperity. The imagery will be rich and colorful and depict inspiration, excellence, possibility and discovery as applied to future learning, skills, and career potential.
The complimentary color scheme is energizing and grounded in nature. The various elements and symbols in the mural have been carefully chosen to inspire and have timeless and universal meaning without being a literal representation of specific courses offered at the college. Elements in the design include humans, birds,a horse, trees, earth, houses and buildings.
• The human element making up the spiral shape is a way to represent connection to community and support .........with the idea of movement towards one’s goals.
• Birds represent freedom of the mind, body and spirit.
• The horse conveys the message of strength and determination, confidence and grace. A horse has the ability ..........to take you through terrain that you could not traverse alone, mountaintops, valleys, and across the ..........waters of life.
• The trees, plants and earth are a reminder of the necessity to remain grounded and connected to nature.
• The buildings represent the college’s connection to the local community.
